The person who signs it off is rarely the marketing manager: it is the property or safety officer, sometimes the insurer, reading a slip test report and a removal clause rather than the artwork. That is why the specification has to be settled at quotation stage. Base film, adhesive and anti-slip laminate form one construction, and a test report only covers the construction that was actually tested. Choose them once the location is known, not after the artwork is approved.

Four locations behave differently and should be specified separately. Dry interior floors such as retail aisles, wayfinding and concourse graphics see footfall, trolley wheels and machine cleaning, so abrasion and edge lift matter more than water. Wet zones such as entrances, produce sections and food courts add standing water, grease and daily detergent, which attack the adhesive edge first. Semi-outdoor areas under canopies get rain splash, UV and temperature cycling. Outdoor pavement of asphalt, concrete or paving stone adds surface texture, grit and mechanical wear from vehicles and street cleaning. Writing the location into the purchase order stops a dry-area material being installed at an entrance.

The anti-slip question is usually answered with one of three families of test. The ramp test under DIN 51130 assigns an R class from R9 upward, measured with a test person walking an inclined, oiled surface; it is the language of large-format flooring and of many European property teams. Pendulum testing reports slip resistance for wet or dry conditions and is common in the UK and Commonwealth markets. The American static coefficient of friction test is a dry laboratory measurement of polished surfaces. These numbers do not convert into each other. Ask the property team which standard and which threshold applies, and whether the report must cover the finished laminated graphic rather than a bare film sample.

Three acceptance failures recur. The first is a report issued for unlaminated base film when the installed product carries a laminate with a different surface. The second is a laminate that protects the print but drops friction below the required class, so the graphic passes at sample stage and fails at handover. The third is drift between the tested sample and the production batch, through a substituted film or a heavier ink laydown that changes the surface. The defence is a written construction specification with product codes for base, ink and laminate, attached to both the report and the purchase order.

An anti-slip report describes one exact build: base film, ink laydown and laminate. Change any layer and you are back to an untested product.

Floor condition decides adhesion more than the film does. Glazed tile and polished stone are dense and low in surface energy: easy to clean, hard to bond, especially where cleaning leaves a residue. Terrazzo is porous and alkaline, and adhesive that sinks into the pores is difficult to remove completely. Epoxy and self-levelling cement are smooth and may carry release agents or curing compounds that must be stripped. Wood and laminate flooring move with humidity and often carry oil finishes that repel adhesive. Permanent, removable and repositionable adhesives then trade initial grab against removal cost: permanent holds best and costs most to take up, removable is specified with a removal window, and repositionable supports repeated short events at a higher unit price.

Installation preparation is a short checklist that prevents most callbacks. Strip polish, wax and detergent film and rinse with clean water; scented cleaner residue is a common cause of edge lift. Confirm the floor is dry, since new concrete and self-levelling screeds need a moisture reading and the full cure period before any film goes down. On porous or low-energy surfaces, use the primer or base film specified. In cold weather initial tack drops, so condition the material indoors, roll it firmly and delay foot traffic. Record the readings and products used; they are the first thing asked for when a graphic fails.

Anti-slip laminates differ mainly in the mineral texture they carry. Fine sand-textured films give a modest friction increase with little visual cost and suit indoor dry areas. Coarser glass-bead or glass-sand surfaces raise friction further but add haze and a visibly rougher feel that softens fine type and photographic detail; embossed texture films sit between the two. Gloss laminate has no place on a floor, because it adds nothing to friction and shows scuffs immediately. Thickness is a second trade-off: a heavier laminate wears better but is stiffer, conforms less well at curves and lifts at edges, while a thin laminate lies neatly and wears through sooner. Trim after lamination with a small margin and plan seams deliberately.

Print process affects how the graphic behaves underfoot and during removal. UV flatbed inks sit on the film surface and give strong, immediate colour, but on a removable construction ink and adhesive have to be matched, or removal tears the film and leaves ink behind. Latex inks are water-based and flexible, which suits conformable films and curved floor transitions, and need adequate drying before lamination so residual moisture does not sit under the laminate. Heavy ink coverage in solid areas changes how the film releases from the liner and re-lifts at removal. Confirm removability on a production sample, not on a colour proof.

On site the control points are air, edges and seams. Roll the graphic firmly from the centre outwards to expel air; trapped pockets become soft spots that turn into trip points within days. Plan seam direction so laps face away from the main traffic flow and from the direction cleaning machines travel, so brushes and squeegees do not catch the edge. Cut back at thresholds and floor transitions instead of ending at the highest wear line. At columns and corners, relieve or wrap the film rather than stretching it, and seal edges in wet zones. Keep traffic off until the adhesive has developed full bond.

Removal is where cheap specifications become expensive. A removable adhesive may come up in one piece per panel in minutes; a permanent adhesive on the same floor can need heat, scrapers and solvent, and on epoxy or sealed concrete may leave a patch that has to be re-coated before the floor is handed back. Price the options as a lifecycle figure: material, installation labour, removal labour, floor remediation risk and downtime of the space. For a one-to-three-day event on sealed tile, removable adhesive with a fine textured laminate is usually enough. For several weeks in a wet zone, keep the removable adhesive but raise the laminate grade and seal the edges. Beyond a season, or outdoors, permanent adhesive with the correct base film and a heavier laminate is the realistic choice, and the removal budget should be approved together with the print.
","Floor Graphics: Anti-Slip Rating, Laminate & Removal","How to specify floor graphics by location: anti-slip test methods, base film and adhesive choice, laminate texture, installation and removal cost.","Jsite Article",[138
gen_3099234a0376.png
"Color science, printing process guides and event production know-how from the factory floor.","/files/02/2d/lab-color.png
148,155,156
"nlhi90v5r6","2026-10-22 10:07:26.574116","Wall Mural Media Guide: Surfaces, Adhesives, Fire Rating","wall-mural-media-surface-adhesive-guide","A procurement framework that starts from the wall substrate and how the space is used, then works back to media, adhesive, roll width and fire documentation.","/files/52/bb/gen_ec64c53c5910.png
"3hiqs2o7gc","2026-10-20 10:13:12.283380","Window Graphics Guide: One-Way Vision vs Clear vs Frosted","window-graphics-one-way-vision-vs-clear-frosted","A buyer's decision table for film type, adhesive and print orientation — and how each choice moves cost, install hours and replacement cycles.","/files/bd/58/gen_c21f063b3f7b.png"]
